On TWoP of 30 Rock

This is going to be a relatively short blog post tonight since my insomnia has been creeping up on me and I need to catch up on ZZZ’s. I figured I’ll talk about my current internship which I only just started last Tuesday, but already is proving to be my coolest job experience yet. I was lucky enough to land a new release marketing internship at Universal Pictures international office while I was studying in London last semester and I really enjoyed the work I did as well as the atmosphere in the office. I got to work on titles like Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Kick-Ass, Despicable Me, MacGruber, Your Highness, and other smaller/limited-release movies. Needless to say, it did kick ass and I was hoping that would boost my chance at interning at NBC Universal again when I returned home for the summer. Almost 3 months, countless e-mails, disappointments and hopeful wishing, phone and in-person interviews with numerous NBC employees, and 3 internship opportunities later (1st was marketing intern at NBC.com and 2nd was Bravo Ad Sales & Marketing), I finally landed a spot with Television Without Pity — a Bravo-owned blog site with a snarky take on TV shows and films.

I HATE the phrase “everything happens for a reason” because it’s usually bullshit fed by girls with One Tree Hill quotes in their profiles, but in this case, I lucked out big time. It made the months of stress and self-esteem ass-kicking worth it and despite it not being entirely relevant to my specific major, it’s EXACTLY what I love to do: voicing my opinion on TV shows and movies and incorporating my lame attempts at humor. I am a Bravo addict (and have been since Project Runway season 1), although I definitely don’t endorse the antics of the Housewives (but watch anyway because it’s frigen entertaining in the worst and weirdest ways possible), but interning at TVWithoutPity.com allows me to research, read, and write content about all the other shows I love/hate to watch or would never watch on other networks. Even when the news headlines of the day are about shows I don’t know/care for, I can manage to incorporate some of my favorite (or not so favorite) shows in comparison/contrast for comedic effect (if it’s not too much of a stretch in terms of relevance). My major and minor may be business (specifically marketing) and advertising, but my heart (excuse cheesy phrasing for sake of no other way to word it) and brain lies in the TV/film industry. I also love being able to write a blog post that can be seen by a much larger audience than my late-in-the-game start-up blog here, and my name is even attached to it. At my last internship, I was happy just being able to contribute work that was actually used for marketing purposes and distributed to the other international offices, but having my name on it is not just Marty McFly-cool to me, but can also be used as proof to my family that 1. I am indeed doing real work & 2. I am determined to pursue a job that involves my love of TV and comedy. And digital media (getting a better grasp on HTML) since I’m interested in social media/Internet marketing.

And it doesn’t hurt that I get to work at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, which I’ve subconsciously and consciously dreamed of since I was a kid watching Saturday Night Live. Last cheesy phrase of the night: it’s a dream come true. Those words are kinda nauseatingly obnoxious, but think of it coming from the weird kid who collected “Best of:” SNL cast DVDs for years; outbid a group of goth (and much larger than me) teens who threatened me as a high school freshman for an SNL season 29 autographed cast photo (my Mom was pleased about that with my $0 a month salary plus benefits to contribute – hey it was for charity); has influenced my little cousins to prefer to watch SNL 1st season and The Office 1st seasons when they sleepover (despite their nerdy older cousin owning full season DVD sets of Doug and Hey Arnold), and who will not quit until I at least audition for Lorne Michaels once in my life (and inevitably be dismissed) or I get to high-five Tina Fey. Whichever comes first.

JUST KIDDING about making this blog short, “my bad” as the kids say. Who am I kidding I’m 5. Also, I’m determined to catch Brian Williams getting in the elevator. I keep telling my older sister that I see him all the time/get lunch with him/have deep, meaningful conversations with him. It would be funny if any of those were close to true. I did see him on the video conference we had for NBC Universal’s “Diversity Week” (back in March I think?) with all the offices across the world (we were sitting in a theater in London, him in 30 Rock’s Studio 8H). So yea, it was kinda like we were in the same room. I didn’t make any attempt to cut to the chase with this blog, but here are the links to my past blog posts on TVWithoutPity.com (TWOP News). I’m currently working on a piece about random (but still funny), somewhat forgotten cameos on Freaks and Geeks (since IFC started airing the series, to be followed by Apatow’s other cancelled-too-soon cult classic Undeclared), so I’ll post that when it’s done.
